Beginning a therapeutic relationship

Beginning the therapeutic relationship is a collaborative process during which you and I come to understand you, your struggles and your successes.

Between my expertise in social work and your expertise in being you, together we begin to build a common language and path that will lead you closer to where and how you want to be.

Some people start counseling because their loved one has insisted on it. Others begin because circumstances have become so dire that counseling seems like the only alternative. Still others come simply to gain insight and gather support during a transitional period.

If, after a complimentary intake session, we decide to undertake a counseling relationship, I will work with you to determine:
1) How you will know that therapy is working
2) Your current resources and strengths and ability to commit to change
3) The risks and benefits of exploring the problems you are facing
4) Your best options for creating change in your life, which may include short-term problem solving or longer term psychotherapy

How Does Therapy Work?
  • Rapport and trust are essential
  • As you explore and share experiences and feelings in therapy you will gain insight into past and present issues
  • Taking that insight into the world is not unlike riding on a three wheeler before sliding by on two wheels
  • Practicing new behaviors and skills can be painful
  • Growth rarely comes without a price, but the payment is affordable compared to the pain of staying stuck
